This piece is the second of a three part series. ‘We Are the Roadmap’ is a commentary about the impact of Black women on trends and popular culture. Each piece in the series has the map of a different city in the background. This one features Atlanta. The figures in each painting all have something interesting going on with their braids/ locs. Hair is such a big component of black female culture, and many times styles that originate in the African American community will go from being seen as ‘classless’ to ‘chic’ in mainstream American views. I intentionally positioned some of her hair to follow the pattern of some of the roads underneath to signify what is proclaimed in the title- We are the roadmap that trendsetters follow.
